Foça, the site of one of three marine protected areas established in Turkey for the preservation of the Mediterranean Monk Seal, a heavily endangered species of sea mammals, is the place where social and economic balances have always been at suitable ranges beginning from the archaic age until today. The relation in this cosmopolite situation brings many advantages to itself and to the region.
In order to plan about tomorrow, we must know about yesterday. Starting from this point, a need is occurred to survey all Aegean on social, economic and cultural history. For this reason in 1997 Foça historical survey centre is established and started to survey and archive all written material on the social, economic and cultural history of Foça.
32 years ago by the choice of Club Mediterranean Foça met tourism. Club Mediterranean was opened first resort of 700 beds in Foça. In the year of 1976, Ministry of Tourism opened the tourism information bureau. Today there are nine resorts registered from the ministrant of tourism in Foça and 27 hotels registered by the municipality. Total capacity of the town is 2676 beds today. Beyond these, in 1999 a resort registered of four stars with 400 beds from the ministrant of tourism will be at service.
In the past only French and German tourists were visiting Foça but from the year 1991, Norwegians are also coming. The average age of tourist visiting the town is thirty. Foça is a place that people come for the tranquality.
Distance to main city Izmir is 70 km. It has situated right in the middle full of little bays and islands with breathtaking view. The city center is on the sea side and surrounding villages on the mainland. The river Gediz crosses all the way the Menemen valley and reaches the sea on the borders of Foça. Yeni Foça, 22 km far away from Foça ,is a small town. Up to 1970s Foça was just a little farming and fishing village. Now Foça is center of tourism for surrounding town.
Mediterranean climate is the dominating climate of the region. Winters are rainy and warm, Summers are arid. In the summer time, average temperature is 26 °C, sea temperature has an average of 22 °C ( the hottest month s of summer is July and August, sometimes temperature rises to 38 °C ).
